I'm still a big newbie at shading :c
Any pointers or online tutorials that would help?

Here's an edit.
Depending on your lighting, you imagine the sun hitting that hat. If it's on the right, more brighter colors will head to the right of the hat/mask. Most players do the top lighting, because it's easier.
Also don't just use Kendricks, he gave you an idea of a lighting source. You also need to reshade the gas chambers. Usually they have a dark square/circle shape in the middle and the lighter colors around it. The goggle or glass shading is fine, and the helmet is good, just instead of that super light color Kendrick added on the left change it to a something in the middle so the shadow is accurate.

If you need me to edit or show you different examples just tell me. I can help you out a lot bro. You seem determined to be a good pixel artist, and I'm no master but I can teach you some tricks that will be useful for you in your future career.
My edit is ugly! *runs away*
Haha, he can if he'd like to, but yes it was an example.
nah you just missed the gas chamber shading. everything else was good bro, and usually shading the mask in I use a cyan white/grey. you should try that, just pure grey looks like a piece of silver not shiny enough.
actually it kinda looks like cyan grey lol just a little lighter colors on that would've been better
I'll try taking your guys suggestions and tips, but I can't guarantee the outcome you guys want :P
Anyways, what's so bad about pillow shading?
Makes it hard to define depth and structure

here's a little something I made in about ten minutes to practice shading.
I'm pretty sure I haven't grasped the concept yet but I hope I'm getting there.

Make the gas tube look like it's round.
