Option to Turn Off the Swear Filter

We are here to discuss about Graal Online Era and its swear filter. We are not here to discuss mental disorders, if you've ever been bullied and all those unrelated subjects. He posted a whole paragraph about his background story. That's how off topic he is. Everybody has their personal problems and here is not the place to say them. We are here to give our ideas and opinions.

Now let's say this option gets implemented, this is how you fix everybody's complaints on this thread.

You have a mental disorder triggered by cuss words? Keep the swear filter on.

You get hurt by words easily or you are easily offended and don't want to see cuss words? Keep the swear filter on.

You have a PTSD triggered by cuss words? Keep the swear filter on

Somebody is saying things that offend you but doesn't contain cuss words? Block the player

A player is harassing you? Block the player and report him for harassment

You get easily offended by almost anything, even if it doesn't contain cuss words? Go to Options->Privacy Options->In-Game Chat Visibility and check "None" and then scroll up and check "Ignore All Private Messages (PMs)"

In the end not everyone thinks that the world is all wars and flames, there are still people that think that there is some good in the world, and the fact that some here wants to break that thought makes it more valid to stop them from turning the game into a higher PG rated one.
So in conclusion Era won’t remove the swear filter, why? Not because of some morals and life breaking truths, but because of business, you see, it’s rated 12+ on the App Store for intense cartoons and fantasy violence, that only gave it that mark, so if there were a change in the swear filter that number would easily go to 16+, which leads to less players, meaning less money meaning never going to happen.

Keep this thread on topic. Don’t ruin it for the thread creator.

I stated in the main post that "Online Interactions" cannot be rated so it wouldn't change the Apple Store rating.

Profanity would be included with the online interactions, usually when an app is submitted to iTunes they have a chart they have to fill out it contains the amount of violence or nudity... in the game. So by changing the filter they’d have to change that also which might alter the rating system of the game and increase it. Of course the game should not “lie” and not warn people about what’s to come inside their games cause if that were to happen and someone complains we never know what’ll happen.

But what I don’t understand is that the Graal online era on the App Store is rated 12+ as for Ol west has it 9+
Which is extremely wrong as both games are similar in basic content.

From what I've seen in Ol' West, I kind of think that the way people use bad words on Era is different. A little too vulgar for some people to handle. But I guess that's the point of turning it on/off.

Well if the App Store is based off of even what the players say in game then I suppose it would make sense why era is 12+. From my experience Era has more mature kids which can be quite rude, ol west has more younger kids so there's not as many rude people. That's just a theory to why era is 12+ and olwest is 9+.

As a person who has been jailed several times for vulgar language I say no

Just by filtering these curse words you're just giving it more power, and there are curse words that are used so frequently that it lost it's meaning lol. cussing is a form of harassment, harassment-(taken from wikipedia)"It is commonly understood as behavior that disturbs or upsets, and it is characteristically repetitive. In the legal sense, it is behavior that appears to be disturbing or threatening."

I'm sorry but I don't want to be blocking 3/4 of the people that are cursing at me?
Also how will the system work? If I have the filter on and you have it off, you send a message using a curse word, either I don't receive the message at all, or the curse word gets replaced by * or anything, it still shows that you intended to use a curse word at me which is basically the same thing, again, as the previous posts stated, everyone knows all the curse words, so what's the use of turning it on? What about the people that don't want curse words then? You can't just tell them to suck it up as it is their right to play a game peacefully too.

Well I just thought of this. Vulgarity is one of the most thing people are jailed for. If cursing is not a problem, then what's the point of vulgarity if it's allowed? It could twist up the rules a little bit tbh.

Would saying a cuss word multiple times to someone fall under this category? yes. How about saying it once towards somebody? Yes indeed so, if youd like to fact check feel free..

(Now to make this one clear i took another definition from 2 other sources)

This would strengthen my previous argument that you are right Cursing is Not harassment but a form of it.(ie a part of it)
So while you continue to say that it Simply is repetitive to be harassment, but that is wrong, as shown harassment while in most cases would be considered repetitive it is [B]not always stuck to being repetitive.

3) i have the same answer for #1 for this part because it also uses disturbing alongside threatening which both fit in with cursing/harassment.

For your first one: i repeat(yet again) that you are right, its not harassment. Its a form of it.After that you just listed forms of harassment...

Your second example : if two people are arguing and throwing curse words at each other that obviously means they want to hurt each other (i.e harassment)

Third one:"Certain words do not equal harassment. Certain repetitive actions equal harassment." Your right depending how you look at it. If i say certain non-offensive words like "hey, yo, yes, pizza" then yes. Same with certain repetitive actions(assuming you meant towards someone else).
But if you say f***, B****, etc. to someone that would fall under harassment.


Finale : if you trip and fall and say s*** then there probably wont be a guy thinking your harassing him (unless hes a weirdo , or got the wrong idea).
Most likely would be your blaming your luck, or the sidewalk,street.This meaning you were "harassing" the street(or our luck, etc.).You blamed something for making you fall so your s*** was directed towards it.Honestly no one would care because the street is a non-living thing so cursing at it does no one harm.(unless hes/she a weirdo , or has the wrong idea)

OK I actually skimmed through this suggestion and I conclude it as crap. Firstly, the filters are there to protect players and this must be the millionth time u r hearing this.

I know the freedom of expression right is being violated but the use of vulgarities do indeed cause the gameplay environment to be be affected negatively. Everyone wants to have a good gameplay experience and it should not be ruined by this option to filter etc because vulgarities shouldn't even be used in the first place.

It's a protective measure to prevent people from starting verbal forms of cyberbullying.

It's not a matter of handling a word or two that are vulgar. It's how rampant people use it online that cuse excessive hurt. It could only be a word or two but if you use it excessively it can turn into harssment and insults. This spoils the safe environment for people to play.

These swearing can allow players to cause serious threat like saying they want to kill someone in very vulgar and unpleasant way. Is someone told you they'd want to kill you in a vulgar manner, you can tell he is very angry and you will be insecure, especially when its online you don't know who that person is and when he will be near you to cause harm.

Using vulgarities is well within the right to freedom of speech, but this is provided that it is used to convey and opinion. Apparently the players online don't just use it to express their views, they use it to swear, scold, degrade and take part in verbal assaults. These will lead to insults - maybe a player or two using it won't cause much hurt in your view, but research has found that other bystanders tend to support the bullies rather than the victim. So one or two using these words can influence others to do the same and it can become a group cyberbullying. I'm pretty sure you've seen cases whereby people commit suicide because they have been severely cyberbullied and most of thses cases involve the use of derogatory terms that the swear filter is attamepting to block, I'm sure it won't feel good for these words to be used on you to a point that it becomes emotionally damaging.

Plus, there are younger children playing so if you use these terms you influence them to do so, and this makes the whole game into a vulgar platform instead of a place to have fun.
You can argue that these players can turn the filter on if they cannot take it, but verbal damage has been done. It's like saying I could let someone drink poison and then if the person feels unwell he can take medications and antitoxin to remove the poison, but the poison has already caused damage. Some of the damage caused by using these words can cause harm that lasts forever, especially when the players using them are very aggressive and take to insulting the parents of players using degrading terms.

And it becomes a never ending war whereby A scolds B with vulgarities, and then B scolds A and vice versa and it never ends. This ruins the whole environment.

You could also say using vulgarities among friends will be seen as a banter, yes it may be true. But once you allow players to use you will never know who will use it on a stranger, who will most likely take it to heart.

So the best way is not to allow these words at all. Every player should be willing to give off this freedom of speech right for a safe environment to play. Era should not be a platform for players to inflict emotional damage and the game has the responsibility to protect its clients from harm.

In my opinion, this is not a good idea. It is better to keep the filter as it. As LYK08 mentioned, the filter is there to prevent players from getting verbally harassed.

well i guess we're not going to have freedom of speech, what a shame because olwest works just fine. everyone acts like it's going to be so different, it won't if you keep the filter on lol. but hey i'm sure if i didn't like the idea i wouldn't consider a bunch of things beendead, me, and a few others have said which counters every problem we came across haha!

I'm sorry man, but everybody who is getting hurt or affected by strangers on the internet who literally can only judge you off your pixel looks you are really soft. And you guys talking about "verbal damage", what's that? Please explain to me what verbal damage is. I think racism shouldn't be tolerated, but other than that, it's fine.

No. Just because the internet puts people at a vulnerable place doesn't mean we should just give up trying to censor and protect game players. It's like saying since the holocaust has taken place before and so it is definitely okay if it happens again.

You mentioned "verbal damage" in your previous post, can you explain what that is?

Bullying and harassing is done either way, with or without cussing. Those two things would still be illegal if the swear filter was off. Threatening people would still be illegal. A threat with the "f bomb" in it or without it, is still a threat, it doesn't change the seriousness of it.

If people get emotionally damaged by people on a game, they shouldn't play the game at all, plain and simple. You said some words can cause damage that lasts forever? Seriously? "Oh I remember 10 years ago, some kid on an online app said something rude to me. I'm still hurting until this day." Like if people are this vulnerable, just keep the swear filter on lol. Nobody is forcing somebody to turn it off.

You still wouldn't be able to go around and harass people or bully people.

I haven't looked at the responses but I don't see this ever happening. Regardless of freedom of expression or not, iEra has an app store rating it must uphold, and allowing this would be breaking that.
Additionally this feature would make it a lot harder for PRs to do their job in being able to distinguish who does or doesn't have the filter turned on, and the feature itself would just encourage more toxic behaviour which iEra doesn't need anymore of.
