I think it's associated with both of your pings. One of the main reasons why I dont use that feature cause im very laggy in-game and the car boots me out in the middle of the ride but i'll raise concern to higher staff just in-case it can be fixed.
It's most likely, as Minho said, a ping issue. That or your friend is constantly dying without noticing.
There's a bunch of bugs with vehicles in general.
