Sometimes i copy frame by frame so that it's easier. (I use an app called pixen) for mac

Oh, well then I can't help you since I use gimp. You don't have like a "duplicate image (into new layer)" or something like that on that program?

Yeah I do, but I also have gimp, just don't like gimp a lot/ as much as pixen
