My idea is that you can obtain it after being a member for so long, so many posts, or reps. Also as nite said they must be registered first.

I like the idea of getting it after so many posts because it makes the sign a reward for becoming part of the forum community instead of just signing up for free stuff.

That's what the new mod team is for, the responsible members would also I'm sure try to prevent spam. There is already a spam system in place isn't there
