If you use paint.net then you don't need to have a transparent background.

You don't have to. I have a really easy way of doing it in paint.net, you can even shade with transparency.

Well I use MS Paint and then use Gimp for transparency thingymajiggies. *_* Just never figured out how to do semi-transparent colours.

Oh another question, what would be a good opacity amount for masks like these?
