My question is why get shells in the first place?

If you want an item in auction, you can buy it using USD (or some other real life currency).
If you want event items (with the exception of taser and all the other tradeable ec items) you can earn them through events, not money.

How do shells come into play?

Because its not easy to win auctions and the chance of winning an item in auction that u really really want is very very unlikely. You usually end up winning something stupid like winter staff for 50k gralats, sell it for 75k tro and buy something u wanted. At least thats what I did.

It has been a long time since they auctioned brellas which is an example of my point.

No one knows what is going to be auctioned. So lets say I really want a red brella. It is very unlikely that I will be able to buy a red umbrella without tro because that is the only legal way to obtain the item. I havent seen a red umbrella auctioned in like 8 months.

easy way to get a rage blade: get 100k tro, sell them for 200k+ aero, sell them all for 600k+ graalats, hell, even a rage blade isnt worth that much.
