Summer technically was May 1st, astronomically. I have no clue who gave you the idea that June 21st marks the beginning of summer, because meteorologically speaking it starts June 1st.
June 21 is the summer solstice, and as the winter solstice and the fall and spring equinoxes represent the beginning of a new season, so does the summer solstice, signifying the official beginning of the season of summer.
